Preventive Control
Natural enemies
Predators
- Bird
- Chicken
- Ground beetle
Management and cultural practices
- Keep field records where damage has been severe. Avoid planting or fallowing those areas. Click beetles, the adult wireworms, return to the same fields to lay eggs.
- Flood fields for at least a month, during sunny weather, to eliminate wireworms.
- Control weeds in and around fields, as click beetles feed on weed seeds.
- Grow Flax (Linum species) as a cover crop to kill wireworms. Flax, a tropical herb,
is also good for controlling root knot nematodes. White mustard and Buckwheat plants are also found to reduce the wireworm population (Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development, 1995).
