Cultural and management practices

  1. Drain the irrigated rice paddy at regular intervals during the first 30 days after transplanting to reduce the egg-laying activities of the adults. Whorl maggot's adults are attracted to standing water for they are semi-aquatic. They are not found in upland rice paddies.
  2. When there is an infestation of whorl maggots in the neighboring areas, direct seeding is recommended although, transplanting of older seedlings prevents infestation to further develop. Whorl maggots do not prefer direct-seeded field and seedbed.
  3. Grow azolla (Azolla microphylla, A. filiculoides) 10 days after planting rice. Azolla, covering the water surface, prevents whorl maggot infestation.
